Alabama Home Inspection Course & School Requirements
Alabama has only a few requirements to become a Licensed Home Inspector, but these are absolutely necessary for you to start earning a paycheck in this career field. Alabama started requiring licensure in 2002, that license being issued by the Alabama Building Commission.

The first requirement is to successfully complete the ASHI Standards and Ethics Exam and the NHIE Exam.

The second is membership in one of the following recognized organizations for Licensed Housing Inspectors:
ASHI – American Society of Housing Inspectors
NAHI – National Home Inspection Examination
NIBI – National Institute of Building Inspectors
The American Inspectors Society
Home Inspection Institute of America

OR

You must have a Certification of Approval by one of the following organizations:
ICC - International Code Council
USVA - U.S. Veterans Administration
HUD - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

OR

You must be licensed in Alabama on or after January 1, 1998 in one of the following fields:
General Contractor
Registered Professional Architect
Registered Professional Engineer
Residential Home Builder

OR

You are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) and one year’s experience as a home inspector and proof of completing 100 home inspections for monetary compensation.

Finally, you must have proof of a Liability and Errors & Omissions Insurance policy.

The field of home inspections is a fast growing business and can be an amazing source of income and pride. You may wonder how that is possible with the slow down in the housing market; the truth is that housing inspectors are being used much more frequently to insure that home buyers are not buying ‘hidden’ or undisclosed problems that have resulted from the previous owner’s inability to pay for needed repairs or to properly maintain the home. Potential buyers are using this information to either reduce the purchase price, facilitate repairs prior to purchase, or to walk away from a deal that would have landed them much further in debt in order to accomplish the necessary repairs. Just think of the satisfaction that you would get from a career that enables you to help people, to insure that they are not being taken advantage of, while still being able to claim the caveats of owning your own business. You will be your own boss and able to set your own hours. You will benefit by tax write offs for business use of your vehicle, for a home office and for all supplies, licensing fees, professional fees and advertising. Even the new computer you purchase to take your distance learning classes is considered a business expense. You will feel the same pride that millions of business owners experience as their business and reputation grows. And it couldn’t be simpler. We also recommend checking out our other online degrees that are offered by our other schools.
