North Carolina’s licensure law, Chapter 143,
Article 9F, enacted in 1993, provides for the
creation of a Home Inspector Licensure Board
within the Department of Insurance.
To be licensed as an Associate Home Inspector:
You must have a high school diploma or its
equivalent (GED).
You must submit an application to the Board
and pay the applicable fee.
You must pass a licensing examination approved
by the board. The exam for Associate Home
Inspectors has 100 questions and a 2-hour time
limit.
You must be employed by, or be working with,
or intend to be working with or employed by a
state licensed Home Inspector and you must
submit a sworn statement by that same inspector
stating that he or she will “actively supervise
and train the applicant.”
To be licensed as a Home Inspector:
You must submit an application to the Board
and pay the applicable fee.
You must pass a licensing examination approved
by the board. The exam consists of 200 questions
and has a 4-hour time limit.
You must possess minimum net assets or a bond
in an amount of not less than $5,000, nor more
than $10,000.
In addition, you must meet ONE of the following
requirements:
You must have a high school diploma or its
equivalent and have been working as a licensed
Associate Home Inspector for at least one (1)
year and you must have completed 100 home
inspections for compensation.
OR
You must have educational experience that the
Board considers equal to the above.
OR
You must be a state licensed general contractor,
architect or professional engineer.
12 hours of Continuing Education (CE) is
required in order to renew your license. This CE
must be in a live classroom setting.
Correspondence and online courses are not
approved for CE.
