South Dakota Licensure Law, Chapter 36-21C,
enacted in 2000 sets forth the requirements for
the regulation of Home Inspectors. Under the
South Dakota Real Estate Commission, Home
Inspectors shall be issued certificates of
registration and then be licensed in compliance
with the provisions of the law. No one may
perform a Home Inspection who is not registered
or licensed in the state of South Dakota.
Applicants for a certificate of registration
must:
Be of good moral character. You can expect
that criminal background checks will be used and
that if you are or have been the subject of a
civil action for poor business practices or
unethical behavior; you may be denied a license.
Possess a high school diploma, or its
equivalent (GED).
Complete 40 hours of an approved course of
study for Home Inspection, as approved by the
Commission.
Complete and pass the registration exam.
Applicants for licensure must:
Be of good moral character.
Possess a high school diploma, or its
equivalent (GED)
Have been a ‘registered’ Home Inspector for a
period of one (1) year and you must have
performed at least 100 Home Inspections for
compensation.
Have successfully completed and passed the
NHIE, National Home Inspector Examination (South
Dakota has added state-specific questions to the
NHIE, and the test is administered by Applied
Measurement Professionals (AMP).
Continuing Education (CE) in the amount of 24
hours for every two year renewal period is
required. Any inspector failing to meet the CE
requirements must return his/her license to the
Commission and be placed on ‘inactive’ status
until such time as he/she can prove the CE
requirements have been met.
