Virginia does not have licensing requirements at
this time, but does have a voluntary
certification law. Furthermore, you cannot call
yourself a ‘Certified Home Inspector’ unless you
have met the certification requirements as
prescribed by the Virginia Board for Asbestos,
Lead, and Home Inspectors.
You must complete at least 35 hours of
technical content education and perform at least
100 Home Inspections
OR
You must complete at least 70 hours of
classroom education pertaining to home
inspecting and have completed at least 50 Home
Inspections
AND
You must pass the NHIE, the National Home
Inspectors Examination
You must also have a certificate of General
Liability Insurance of at least $250,000.00
You must have a High School diploma or its
equivalent (GED)
IN ADDITION
The Board MAY grant certification to a person
who is a member of one of the Board-recognized
national associations for Home Inspectors, such
as the ASHI (American Society of Housing
Inspectors), the NAHI (National Association of
Home Inspectors) , or the NIBI (National
Institute of Building Inspectors), provided
their membership requirements are in line with
the Boards certification requirements.
