Wisconsin requires registration of Home
Inspectors, in compliance with Wisconsin
Certification Law, Chapter 440.97, enacted in
1998.
The law specifically requires that:
You complete an application form, registering
with the Department of Regulation and Licensing.
You pass an examination approved by the
Department and one in close keeping with the
NHIE, the National Home Inspector Examination.
You conduct a “reasonably competent and
diligent” inspection, though that inspection is
not required to be technically exhaustive.
Home Inspectors are prohibited from claiming
that a “reasonably competent and diligent”
inspection was performed, thereby limiting
his/her liability.
You cannot perform repairs, maintenance, or
improvements to any structure that you’ve
inspected within the prior two (2) years.
