Most colleges and universities will
accept credits from each other as long as the accrediting
agency that accredits the institution recognized by the US
secretary and department of education. This is very
important as we see many schools that do not have the proper
accreditation and when it comes time to transfer the other
colleges and universities won’t accept the credits. This is
why it is very important prior to enrolling in any school to
make sure that the school you are attending is properly
accredited.
To transfer your credits you will need
to talk to the school you are going to transfer the credit
to. This school is the one that will allow or not allow
certain credits. The reasons for not accepting credits might
be due to the level of course you are transferring (perhaps
it is too low) or that you are trying to transfer more
credits than you are allowed. Many universities in the US
will only allow you to transfer a certain amount of credits
to their school as they want you to take the majority of the
courses from them directly. You need to realize that they
are putting their name on your diploma and they want to make
sure you are properly trained.
One of the main things schools look for
when dealing with credit transfers is whether the school is
a member of CHEA (Council for Higher Education). If you have
served in the military then you may be eligible for earned
credits.
Another thing to consider is using the
CEP or college level examination program. This program
allows you to earn college credit on what you have already
learned or experience that you have. Roughly 3500 colleges
grant credit for CLEP exams. This will allow you to earn
college level credits quicker.
One recent problem has come up with
transferring credits lately and that is transferring credits
from a nationally accredited institution to a regionally
accredited one. Generally speaking regionally accredited
schools are non-profit and academic oriented. Nationally
accredited schools are usually for-profit. Each have a
different set of standards and regionally accredited schools
are considered higher end schools and feel that the
standards are low for national accredited schools. We have
received great feedback from people who went to both types
of schools so it is always important to note that if you are
taking a course from a nationally accredited school and you
know you are going to transfer the credits, make sure you
can transfer them prior to enrolling.
