Military Housing Stipend Available for Distance Learners

Among the benefits available to Armed Forces personnel after the passing of the Post-9/11 GI Bill is a housing allowance, which is based on the monthly basic allowing for housing (BAH) payable for a military member with dependents in pay grade E-5 residing in the same ZIP code for the school where the individual is enrolled. Service men and women and eligible spouses and dependents have long been eligible for these housing benefits while enrolled at degree-granting institutions in their locale, but the Post-9/11 GI Bill adds something more: Housing allowances are now available to students enrolled solely in distance learning, including online distance education.

The housing allowance for students enrolled in distance learning programs with online schools is half the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents, with the current rate being $673.50 for 2011, with little change expected in 2012. The amount of credits being taken can lead to an increase or decrease of this benefit due to pro-rating.

This benefit for students enrolled in online distance learning programs became affective October 1, 2011. What this means for students is that now tuition assistance and other benefits can take care of the cost of education, while housing can be at least partially taken care of with GI Bill benefits. Rather than worrying about the cost of housing while studying, students can focus on their course work and progressing in their degree, licensing or certification programs. Online distance learning allows students to take advantage of the housing stipend available without having to relocate to an area with a school offering the programs the students are interested in.
