Train To Be An Electronics Technician

You know the tool belt and its meaning. When a home is being built or a new kitchen is being installed, the electrician is always there. Not surprising since there are about 700,000 of these licensed, and very much in demand, tradesmen. This is an apprenticeship-based trade. You will have to study under a master electrician for at least four years and during this time, you will be required to take 144 hours of classroom instruction each year. Once you complete this process, you will become a Journeyman Electrician and you will be required to obtain state licensing to work. But you will have achieved a coveted place in the industry, that of a licensed, union Journeyman Electrician. The next step is that of Master Electrician. In most states the requirement is at least 8 years experience under the tutelage of a Master Electrician and Journeyman status in good standing. As you can see, this is a very training and education intensive trade.

Almost every licensed electrician is a member of the Union, the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). This is a very strong union and the benefits are, well, significant to say the least. This is career of commitment, as you will need to spend a lot of precious time to achieve the initial status of Journeyman, as this position requires a formal apprentice and membership in the union is highly regarded.

You can expect to be paid a fixed wage and in most cases, this will be a percentage of the union rate for a Journeyman Electrician. As with any strong and independent union, the benefits include retirement, health care, vision, dental, vacation and many others. The protection and security afforded the electrician is enough to warrant union membership. However, coupled with the other benefits, it forms much of the prestige and value of the profession. Some union members retire with over $1,000,000.00 after 40 years! In addition, lifetime benefits as well beyond that figure in numbers.

What about the future? This is a question asked my many who read these figures and facts. The demand for new electricians is expected to be good over the next ten years while continuing to outpace the national average. This is due primarily to the strong demand for new construction alone. However, remember, your job is not limited to the trash-compactor. New manufacturing technologies require new wiring and that means work. The real "X-Factor" in the equation is solar energy. This is only just now starting to become a factor in the national economy and this will produce high demand for those with the union card and the ubiquitous tool belt.

You can find electronic technician and repair careers by getting the proper training completed by an accredited school.
