Gunsmith Training Information - How to Become a Gunsmith:

While a license is required to own a gun, and certainly to sell guns no special certification or license is needed to make or repair them. Other than, of course a Federal Firearms License.  There are specific laws governing the operation of a gunsmith's establishment as well. These will include both state and local as well as the federal laws. What you will need is the education and that is the key to this career. Without the proper training and verification from the school you attend (which must be licensed) you will have little chance to break into the field. The education will last anywhere from 14 to 18 months covering 1800 hours of training most of which will be lab time. There are a number of highly regarded schools, as well as community colleges and organizations offering the same training. The full-time programs are available with the schools or community colleges. Due to the nature of the profession, you can apprentice under a gunsmith as well

Areas of Expertise
This is a time-honored trade. There is a strong sense of professionalism and commitment that is inherent to the field. There are also many sub-specialties such asFinisher, finishers work with chemical processes to finish the guns barrel, stock and action. Stockmaker, as the name implies, you will custom make the stocks for the gun using mainly hand tools. Checkerer, a specialty involving the decoration of gun stocks as well as many others. This is a craft and almost every aspect of this profession involves craftsmanship and a love of quality. This field and any career ion it must be a commitment on your part in order to pursue a career in the field.

Salaries average between $25,000 and $45,000 annually. But most gunsmiths operate their own shops and there the money is different. Custom gun work is generally expensive and most of the fees billed are for the craftsman's time and labor. While starting pay is generally low, this is usually doe to the fact that most who start out in this trade are apprentices seeking to build their careers. Get the proper training and become a gunsmith.

The outlook for this age-old industry, if it continues as it ahs in the past, is generally steady.  The rate of employment growth projected over time is about the same. However, this is a demanding profession and skilled craftsman are always in demand. There is employment available in the manufacturing segment, as well as the military. Nevertheless, the bulk of the industry is composed of the individuals who choose to open a shop and start a business with this as their career choice. Most enthusiasts and sportsmen prefer to work with an established professional and this is very likely to continue. Major expansion is as unlikely, as there has been a significant contraction of the market. Stability is hard to find nowadays, and this trade is one of the rare examples of the only stability left.
