Learn to Become an Animal Groomer

Do you love animals? Do you think you have what it takes to work with animals on a daily basis to groom them? As an animal groomer it will be important that you are comfortable working with many different types of animals and also communicating with their owners. You will need to be adept at bathing pets, styling them based on their breed and hair type and length, and maintaining their hygiene. You will also be expected to brush, trim, and de-matt an animal’s hair, trim their nails, inspect their skin to ensure it is healthy, and clean their ears. In this profession you will need to stay abreast of different animal breeds (both purebreds and crossbreeds) and how they should be groomed and styled. As an animal groomer you may work in large scale animal shows, for an individual who owns a grooming business, or you will be qualified to open your own grooming business. To gain the knowledge and skills necessary for this occupation you have the choice of pursuing a diploma program, a veterinary degree, or you can complete an apprenticeship.

In order to be qualified to work as an animal groomer you will want to either complete a formal training program in pet grooming or complete an apprenticeship under an experienced animal groomer. While an apprenticeship program typically only lasts a couple of months, a formal degree program will likely be more in-depth and will take you longer to complete. Within an associate’s degree program you can expect to complete classes such as: dog breed groups, grooming and bathing techniques, basic animal handling skills, and dog and cat anatomy. In addition, you can expect to be taught about each of the tools that you will need to use on a daily basis to perform grooming on animals. Although certification is not always required, by obtaining certification you will be more likely to be successful in this field. In addition, if you plan to open your own grooming business, a certification is likely to help you obtain new customers and prove your abilities to them. Feel free to request a complimentary information packet from any of the schools on this site that are appealing to you and that you think will help you accomplish your educational and career goals. As a certified animal groomer you will be able to work as a mobile pet groomer, in a salon type environment for animals, at a veterinary clinic, at a pet supply store, or in an animal shelter.
