Project Management is esoteric enough. Just try to imagine herding butterflies with a sprinkler. Building anything requires project management. Just the idea of managing the construction of a bridge or school or factory is daunting enough. Now try to imagine managing a software development project or the implementation of a new database system across a distributed, heterogeneous corporate environment. You would need considerable research and education just to understand what those things are so that you could have a real sense of this profession.

This is one of the newest of the branches of Project Management. Most international and national organizations that represent project managers are still quantifying it and firm numbers are still being collated. Generally, IT project managers develop requirements, budgets and schedules for a firm’s Information Technology projects, such as the ones mentioned above. What must be considered is that where most construction projects are built first and then used, in the area of Information Technology and its uses in business, government and the military the system being built is being used while you are managing its development. That is an additional layer of difficulty in an already challenging job.

Project Management is a certification program. At almost every college, an extension program of 12 to 15 credit hours will be available. Alternately, a direct certification program from one of the recognized Project Management Institute's can be taken. At most institutions Project Management is a graduate level program and can be a part of a Masters program. The direct certificate program requires either a Bachelors degree or 8000 hours (four to five years) of practical experience.

However, it is highly recommended that you major in the field that you intent to pursue such as engineering or computer science. There are certification programs that allow you to sit for the exam with as little as 23 credit hours or 1500 hours of practical experience. With the vastly increased complexity of Information Technology, a degree is a requirement. The most likely scenario is a successful degree in Information Technology, programming, networking or other computer related field and at least one to two years in the field leading to certification by a recognized PMI (Project Management Institute).

Once you have begun your career you can expect to earn in the $65,000 to $95,000 range. With several years of field experience, your earnings can easily reach into the six-figure range. The future of this field is very unclear. While its current growth is predicted to outpace the national average this is not a real reflection of the industries potential. Technology is changing and, well, internet speed. The rise of Open Source Software in the business and government sectors will mean that software and IT systems will be increasingly built in-house, rather then bought "off the shelf."

This could contribute drastically to the demand for those with the education and training to manage those projects. Additionally, while actual programming will contract out increasingly to outsourcing firms and internationally, the projects themselves will need to be managed in-house. Nullifying the effect of "off-shoring". If you have what it takes to tackle this job your future is very secure. Find a project management training program today and get started.
